1950s

Poole Waterfield Limited can trace its origins back to the 1950s.

R T Poole & Co was founded in the early 1950s and occupied offices at 186 Wolverhampton Street, Dudley.

The practice shared the building with an insurance broker and the two worked together on a regular basis. The business relationships formed at this time remain to this day.

In the late 1950s John Waterfield joined R T Poole and Co. At his previous employers, where he was an Articled Clerk,  he recalled visiting clients on his bike to deliver accounts in and around Dudley.

1960

By the early  1960s John Waterfield joined in partnership with Mr  Poole and together they formed Poole Waterfield & Co . During the next two decades the practice became more established and worked along side banks and building societies who would regularly recommend the practice to their customers.

1968
1968

In 1968 the practice moved a short distance to Wolverton Road, Dudley. Where Poole Waterfield remained for the next 40 years.  During this time the business expanded and staff were recruited, some of whom are still with us today!

1970
1970s

In the early 1970s strikes restricted electricity across the country and for a time the working week for Poole Waterfield was reduced to three days. For some staff this meant that they had their first experience of “Working from Home”!

In those days our clients included steel stock holders, motor dealers and large engineering companies  based in and around Dudley.

Most companies required an audit at this time, however business consultancy was becoming more of a focal point with Mr Waterfield and Mr Poole providing sound business advice to the their clients, a number of which we are still advising today!

1980
1983

Sadly in 1983 Mr Poole passed away. Through this difficult time,  Mr Waterfield continued to run the practice, and with the support of his wife Helen, key managers and staff the business continued to grow.

1990s

A branch in Lye was opened for a short time with a small team of five. The two branches eventually merged and the staff were moved to Wolverton House. The client base had now expanded  into the aviation industry, veterinary surgeons, solicitors and property developers and were often from much further afield.

1990s
1990s

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw more changes when Mr Waterfield’s two children, William and Helen joined the practice.  Both worked in the auditing and accounts department.

In 2004 John Waterfield’s son in law David Gibbens joined the practice from the Law Society.  The experience he had gained meant that the practice was able  to attract a healthy portfolio of solicitor firms.

2007

In 2007 the practice purchased  Priory House, Priory Road, still a stone’s throw away from Dudley town centre

2008 – 2020

After extensive refurbishment Poole Waterfield moved into the property in 2008 and occupied it for 12 years.

With the financial crisis underway the provision of management accounts and quarterly consultancy meetings became critical to many clients. Our focus being to support our clients through the difficult times.

2018

Sadly John Waterfield passed away in January 2018 at the age of 83.

Having lived through the Second World War he had a great interest in history. He also had a passion for aviation (he held a private pilot’s licence for many years), classic cars and classical music. He was also an accomplished pianist.

However, his priority was always Poole Waterfield and the welfare of clients and staff alike many of whom became personal friends over the years.

John was still actively involved in the practice until a few weeks before he died, which was no surprise to those who knew him.

2020

In early 2020 the practice, under the leadership of  the next generation – William Waterfield,  Helen Gibbens and David Gibbens, the practice moved to Custom House on the Waterfront Brierley Hill, the site of the former Round Oak Steel works.  It would have been hard to believe when Mr. Waterfield and Mr. Poole started out in business in the 1950s that this is where our offices would be.

Little did we know that within two weeks of moving in the Covid pandemic meant we had to ‘Stay Home’. Poole Waterfield once again found itself adjusting to working from home.

Adapting quickly to the situation we remained open ‘virtually’ for the next six months and continued to deliver the service and support our clients needed throughout this unprecedented time.

In July 2022 David Gibbens passed away after a short illness. He was a passionate Welsh Rugby Union supporter having been born and brought up in South Wales.

David qualified as a chartered accountant  in 1992 and worked as a compliance officer for the Law Society for 12 years before joining Poole Waterfield.

David focussed on building strong relationships with his clients so that he could offer effective and valuable advice.

Like John,  David’s clients often became friends.

David’s untimely passing at the age of 57 was a great shock and he will never be forgotten.
